Hay, Forage & Feeding Fundamentals
Feeding is not only about calories. For many small pets, food supports dental wear, gut movement, foraging behavior, and daily enrichment. A good feeding setup makes the right foods easy to access and keeps treats from replacing essentials.
Know the species baseline
Guinea pigs and rabbits generally need constant access to suitable grass hay. Chinchillas also rely heavily on hay. Hamsters, mice, rats, and gerbils have different feeding patterns and often use a balanced mix or pellets with controlled extras. Always verify the diet for the exact species, age, and health condition.
Hay quality checks
- Hay should smell fresh, grassy, and dry, not musty.
- Avoid dusty, damp, or moldy hay.
- Offer it in a way that keeps it clean but still easy to reach.
- Refresh daily if it becomes soiled or ignored.
Forage as enrichment
Foraging encourages natural searching behavior. Scatter small amounts of appropriate food, use simple paper-based puzzles, or tuck safe forage into hay. The point is to slow feeding and add activity without hiding food so well that your pet becomes stressed or misses meals.
Treat control
Sweet treats, colorful mixes, and high-fat extras can be overused quickly. Keep treats small and occasional. For many small pets, a new texture, a cardboard tunnel, or fresh hay can be more useful than sugary snacks.
Feeding station setup
- Keep water separate from deep bedding that may be kicked into bowls.
- Use stable bowls that cannot tip easily.
- Place hay where your pet naturally spends time, but away from damp corners.
- For bonded animals, provide enough access points to reduce competition.
When to seek advice
Reduced appetite, fewer droppings, weight loss, drooling, tooth concerns, or sudden food refusal can become urgent in small pets. Contact an exotic-pet veterinarian rather than waiting for the problem to resolve on its own.
Burrowly buying tip
Choose feeding products that keep food clean, visible, and easy to refill. A tidy feeding station helps you notice appetite changes early.
